Planning For The Cost of Painting a House

Spring is an ideal time to paint your home since the weather is nice and the job won’t be interrupted by storms. However, for most homeowners, the real issue is how much a paint job is going to cost in terms of time and money – now what time of year is best for the painters.

While the cost of a paint job can vary there are some basic rules that can help you understand. It’s also important to remember that a good paint job makes your home more valuable if you do decide to sell or get an appraisal, so don’t skimp and cut corners to save a few bucks.

Know the Cost

The cost of a paint job really depends on the size of the home being painted. However, as a general rule of thumb an average 1,500 square foot home will likely cost about $2,000 to $3,000 to paint in terms of labor.

A home of that size will also require a considerable amount of paint, which can vary wildly per gallon – anywhere from a few dollars to over $50 for premium paints and unique colors. You can generally paint about 200 square feet with a gallon of paint, so estimating your total paint cost shouldn't be too hard if you know how big your home is.

An interior paint job will generally cost less than an exterior paint job. Typically that means about 15% to 20% less in terms of labor and the amount of paint needed.

Save Your Money

Even if your home doesn't need a paint job right now, putting some money aside in a ‘repair fund’ or special bank account is likely a wise idea. In most areas you can get away with having your home painted about once every five to six years.

With the average paint job costing between $2,500 and $4,000 for labor and supplies, you’ll want to save about $60 per month so you won’t be in for a shock down the road.

Prepare Your Home

Before a painting crew shows up you’ll need to spend a little bit of time getting your home ready. Some things they will do – like taping up your floors so they won’t get covered with paint – but there are things you need to do on your own.

Outside, make sure you move all pieces of furniture and accessories. That means everything from barbecue grills to lawn furniture and kids toys.

You’ll want to do the same thing inside your home – moving the furniture away from the area that needs to be painted. You’ll also want to remove curtains and pieces of art so they won’t become splashed with paint or get in the crew’s way.

However there are some paint companies that will do all the preparing for you, you just need to do the research.

Having your home’s interior or exterior painted is a great way to boost its value and make your space more enjoyable for you. It can be costly and time consuming, but it is well worth the effort.

If you can, you might even want to plan a vacation or fun activities during the day with your family when a painting crew is at your house. Have a friend check in on your place and keep your phone handy, but don’t sit and stress over something so routine. You hired pro’s for a reason.

How Much? Defining House Painting Cost

How Much? Defining House Painting Cost

Painting the exterior of your home is something you need to do every few years to make sure your home looks its best on the outside. If you’re considering selling your home or having it appraised, it’s also an important step to make sure your home is valued properly.

When it comes to the interior of your home the paint job plays a big role in your décor and how your home is perceived. While painting a room on your own might be possible, taking on the whole house can be an overwhelming job and one that isn’t always cost-effective.

However, figuring out how much you should pay for an exterior or interior paint job can be difficult for many homeowners. Luckily there is some basic information that can help guide you through the process of finding a painter and making sure you’re getting a decent deal on your paint job.

Determine Paint Costs

Paint costs might not seem like the biggest part of a job, but if you’re using premium paint they can really add up. Even if you choose a lower grade of paint for your interior or exterior you’ll need two coats of paint for the job to look complete.

Typically a gallon of paint will properly cover about 350 square feet of space. Very dark colors often require a little bit more paint than that too look even. Lighter colors can sometimes use less paint, but that’s still a good average.

Sometimes your painting company can provide paint for you at a discount, but in some cases the cost could be higher than the store. Always ask about the fee per gallon and compare the price to buying on your own.

Paint prices for the interior or exterior of a home can easily range from $300 on the low end to well over $1,500 on the high end.

How Big Is Your Home?

When determining the cost of an exterior paint job you’ll need to know how big your house is. In general, the smaller the home the less the paint job will cost, though there are some caveats based on how difficult your home is to paint.

On the low end of the scale you’ll likely be looking at least $1,500 to paint a home between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet just for labor. On the high end of the spectrum you could be looking at between $3,000 and $5,000 per job. Interiors jobs generally cost about 10% to 20% less because they’re easier on painters and don’t require power washing or heavy sanding.

If you need the job done in a short period of time that could cost extra because of additional manpower that could be needed. If you’re looking to save money, consider a smaller crew that will take a week or so to paint your entire home instead of a big crew that will get the job done in two to three days.

Why Not D.I.Y.?

Painting your home on your own is possible. However that doesn’t mean it’s a cost-effective project for you to take on.

You’ll still have all of the paint costs and you’ll likely need to hire help unless you can take two weeks off work or happen to have a group of friends that wants to help paint your home. That’s an additional cost, and in most places you’re looking at $15 to $20 per hour for that type of labor.

You also don’t have the tools that the painting company has. Renting a power washer could cost you $100 and buying miscellaneous tools that would be provided by the painting company – buckets, trowels, brushes, etc. – can easily run you a few hundred dollars.

When you really crunch the numbers doing the job yourself very well may not be worth it.

Hiring a painting company can boost the value of your home and make it much nicer for you to live in. If you do ever decide to sell potential buyers also like hearing that your home was painted by professionals for peace of mind.

When it’s time to paint inside or outside, hiring a professional painter is usually the right choice.

The Importance of Interviewing Painting Companies

The Importance of Interviewing Painting Companies

The Importance of Interviewing Painting Companies

Painting your home, whether you’re doing it after building a new space or if you’re just trying to liven up your house, is a great way to make a big impact with relatively little money. However, if you’re like most people, the idea of painting your home yourself isn't one you relish, and likely one you’re afraid of if you know it’s going to be a big job.

When it comes to painting the interior of your home, who you hire is essential. While many painters will tell you they can do the job efficiently, under budget and in the time allotted, the truth is that many simple don’t live up to their promises. That’s why interviewing painting companies and understanding who they are and how their business runs is essential.

Use these tips to help you interview a painting contractor so you can find the right one for your interior paint project.

Understand Your Needs

Before you start interviewing painting companies to do work in your home it’s important that you understand what you’re going to be talking about and why. That means taking the time to make a list of rooms that need to be painted and what particular design scheme you’re going with.

You don’t need to know all the technical details of the project – that’s the job of the contractor you’re going to hire. You do need to be able to express what it is you want and what your budget is before you involve outsiders.

Ask For Referrals

If you’re like a lot of homeowners you don’t know where to start when looking for a painting contractor. In most cases, asking for referrals from trusted friends and family members is a good way to start the search.

Talk to them about the experience they had with their painting contractor and make sure it was a positive one. Make sure the job came in on time, on budget and the work was done in a satisfactory manner.

You might also consider asking other companies you've worked with for referrals. For example, a contractor that worked on your driveway or built your kitchen cabinets might know somebody that could do the work for you.

Chances are if they did a good job in your home so will the people they refer, but you’ll still want to interview them.

Seek Multiple Estimates

Once you have a list of at least three painting contractors to do your work you can go ahead and schedule interviews and estimates. You’ll want to set these up on the same day or within a day or two of each other whenever possible so opinions of the meetings will be fresh in your mind when it’s time to make a decision.

When talking with a painting contractor, make sure you ask the following questions:

·         Are you licensed to work in this state and area? Can you provide proof?

·         Are you insured and bonded? Can you provide proof?

·         Are you part of any union or contractor’s association who can vouch for your work?

·         Do you have referrals for residential work you've done?

·         Do you do the work yourself or do you hire outsiders?

·         Can you guarantee your work in regards to price, time frame and quality?

Hiring a contractor can seem like a complex task, but the truth is that most painters who can positively answer the questions above will do good work for you. After all, painting homes is their livelihood, and doing a bad job could result in bad word of mouth in the area – something that can be a killer for a local painting company.

Take your time and compare estimates. Cheapest isn't always best, so make sure you weigh the cost against references and professionalism.

What NOT To Do When Painting And Decorating your Home

What NOT To Do When Painting And Decorating your Home

When it comes to painting and decorating the interior of your home, you’re faced with literally thousands upon thousands of choices. As a homeowner, that can be a little overwhelming if you don’t have a background in interior design!

However, there are some simple tips that can help guide you through the process of perfecting the look of your house. Of course, your personal style should still be the guiding beacon, but these tips can keep you from making disastrous mistakes that will undo any good decisions you make in your home.

homedecore.png

Hold Off On The Paint

It makes sense to paint your walls before you start adding furniture, right? After all, you’re going to have that paint color up on the wall anyway. Actually, painting your walls before you’ve picked out your furniture, even down to accessories, is the wrong move.

When you put paint up first you’re limiting your décor choices. A sofa or table that you love may not work with one shade of paint, but work perfectly well with one just a few shades lighter or darker.

If you paint after you pick your furniture you won’t have that problem since you can make sure the paint color works with everything you’ve chosen for a given room.

Focus On What You Need

Decorating your home can feel a bit like running wild in a candy store. However, simply choosing items that you like isn’t really the best way to go about the task.

Instead, what you really need to do is make a list of items that you already have and want to use. In some cases, you may be able to use all of them, though others may need to be sold based on your overall plan for the room.

From there, you can begin to figure out which quality pieces of furniture are the most important. For example, you might need a sofa or side chairs for your living room. Start with those pieces and find them first before moving on.

That doesn’t mean you can’t keep your eye out for other great items while you shop, but making snap decisions based on what you like can be very limiting later on. Get what you need most first and work from there.

Always Get Paint Samples

When you pick out paint at your local home improvement or paint store it can be tempting to grab a bunch of paint chips, take them home and stick them on the wall. However, this really isn’t a very good way of deciding on whether or not a paint color is right for your space.

While you can go ahead and take those paint chips home to think about what color you like best, you really need to narrow down your choices and buy small samples before making a final decision. Paint a small section of your wall with the colors still in the running and live with it for a few days.

That way you’ll be able to see what your paint color will look like in the brightest part of the day and middle of the night in your chosen room. The sample might be the exact color, but that doesn’t mean that’s how it will look in your space.

Painting your home and choosing the décor can seem complicated but it really doesn’t have to be if you simply follow the three steps above. They’re the most essential tips you should be using to guide you, and they really are the principles that most interior designers use to build a space for their clients.

Take your time and be patient – you can have the home you’ve always wanted!

Creating a Sensational Outdoor Space for Your Home

Creating a Sensational Outdoor Space for Your Home

We have all seen those garden magazines at the checkout counter, at local stores. They showcase some of the most elegant gardens and outdoor living spaces that could ever be imagined. They are pictures that can even make us a little bit jealous…oh, how wonderful it would be to have such a great outdoor paradise.

Unfortunately, the gardens and outdoor spaces seen in these magazines are done by professionals much of the time. Furthermore, it can be expensive to replicate any one of the photos that can be seen in a magazine. The whole purpose of creating that ideal outdoor living space is to relax. But, it seems like it would be near impossible to relax, knowing that you have spent an arm and a leg, to get that dream outdoor paradise.

Luckily, you don’t have to spend much, to still have your own personal outdoor retreat. With just a bit of time, some thrifty shopping, and knowing how to arrange, your garden paradise could easily become a reality.

en_Ergo_Adirondack_chair.jpg

First, start by getting outdoor furniture. The best option—an inexpensive alternative that is still beautiful—is the ever so popular plastic Adirondack chair.  These can usually be found in a great variety of different colors.

However, when choosing furniture of any type (even outdoor furniture), it is important to remember that you might want to change the décor. For this purpose, it is best to play it safe, and get your outdoor furniture in either a relaxing white, or a dramatic black. These two colors will lend themselves to a variety of different styles, and will always look great.

When buying the chairs, purchase them in sets of two. This will create a friendly, inviting feel when they are placed. Also, invest in a bistro table, which would look nice sitting between the two chairs. This combination of chairs and a table will create a space that feels more welcoming, as well as relaxing.

Next, it is time to add plants to the space. This is a great time to add a splash of color, as well as whimsy. Start with some basic, inexpensive terra cotta pots. Then, with acrylic spray paint, you can create a wild collection of flower pots, that are sure to please the eye. Yellow is always a nice color, as it lends itself well to a garden. So does green. But the sky's the limit here. Choose paint that is in colors that inspire you…that make you want to spend time in your outdoor space.

After the flower pots have been painted, and have dried, it is time to add plants. Flowering plants, such as mums, can add a very charming splash of color. At the same time, succulents can bring about a relaxed feeling, as they require little maintenance.  The important thing is to purchase plants that make you feel happy. Then, arrange them into groups of similar plants. When placing the pots around the outdoor space, do so in sets of three. This is a number that is known to create a great visual presence.  Add plants at the sides of the chairs, and even put a small single pot on the bistro table. Imagine the sitting area as the center of your space. The flower pots should be arranged in a way that naturally draws you into that space. As for garden décor, stepping-stones can be created on a budget. All you need is a bag of quick drying cement, glass stones in the color of your choice, and a water tray…the type used for the bottom of a flower pot. Pour the cement into the tray, and let it start to set. Before it has completely set, add the glass stones. Once the cement has fully dried, take it from the tray. And, just like that, you have a great stepping stone, with wonderful colored glass, that will sparkle under the sun.

Lastly, a great way to give your outdoors a new fresh look, power washing. Power washing has many uses. You can use it to clean your sidewalks, decks, docks, fences, patios, roofs etc. By doing this you will have the perfect finish to an exterior renovation.                                                                                                             Outdoor living is something that appeals to a great number of people. How to Ensure Security and Confidence in Choosing a Home Renovation Company

It seems like these days, everyone and their mother has remodeled or renovated in some shape or form.  And, why not?  It can make your living situation more comfortable (two bathrooms is a huge step up for a family of five), it can increase the value of your property, and it can make your house the envy of your block.

However, remodeling is no easy feat.  It’s a difficult process to do on your own, which is why many people hire home renovation companies to help them get the job done.

That said, not all home renovation companies are a good thing -- you’re going to have to do a little vetting to find your perfect match.  Read on for tips!

What makes a good home renovation company?

  • Qualifications
Good home renovation companies and contractors should have good qualifications -- the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers four distinct types of certification.  Make certain your renovation company is certified before hiring them!  As only full-time, professional remodeling contractors who have been in the business for a minimum of five years are eligible for certification through NARI -- so you can be sure that they are well-experienced and serious about what they do.
  • Safety
Safety is another key ingredient when it comes to remodeling.  You don’t want your new and improved house to be falling apart on you.  Finding a qualified and well-recommended company will help make sure that safety guidelines are followed to a T.

How do I find a reputable home renovation company?

  • Ask around
As with dentists, doctors, and tutors, word of mouth is one of the most straightforward methods with which to find a good home renovation company.  Ask around -- and do a little research while you’re at it.  Do you have any friends who have recently remodeled?  Most likely, yes (even if you don’t you probably have a friend of a friend who has).  Narrow down your list of friends and acquaintances who have had recent work done to the people whose homes you really like and admire.  Who got the best deal?  Who got the best quality work done?  Who got their work done the most quickly?  These are all questions you should take into consideration as you begin your research.
  • Check reviews
If you don’t know anyone who’s recently remodeled, all is not lost: luckily, these days customer reviews are there for the picking all over the World Wide Web.  Sites like Yelp can give you a comprehensive and (mostly) unbiased idea of what you’ll get.  And hey -- you might go in looking at one company, and find the local favorite through your researching!  Most online reviews will give you a more objective opinion than you might find in a magazine or other resources, because they generally come directly from customers.

With a little research, you’re well on your way to feeling confident in your choice of home renovation company.  And once you’ve selected your home renovation company?  Well, next stop is your dream home!

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014! Staging a Complete Home Remodel for the New Year

Your home truly is your castle. It is your little slice of the world that it is yours to create and mold into a space that can support a comfortable atmosphere that meets your needs and accurately represents who you are.

With the New Year still young and yours to take, what better way to generate a brand new start for you and your family than by beginning a home renovation project?

Despite how exciting the idea of a home renovation can be, getting started can be quite daunting. There is a lot to take into consideration, including the design, the plans and the budget.

home renovation plan.jpg

Try not to feel overwhelmed; with the proper preparation and planning, you will not only be able to successfully implement your dreams but see it to fruition as well.

Here we have compiled some of our most helpful tips in guiding you through a smooth home renovation.

Step 1: Make a Plan

The first phase of any home renovation, no matter how big or small, is creating a plan.

Sit down and create a list of the changes you would like to make to your home. Have an open dialogue with other members of your family about your ideas and theirs. Decide what it is you really want to achieve through this renovation; what additions and improvements do you want to make and why? What alterations are a priority and what can wait if the budget doesn’t suffice?

Step 2: Set a Budget

Determine how much you can financially invest in your renovation. What is the total amount that you can spend? Once you set a total budget, start breaking down the budget. How much do you want going towards the different pieces of the project? Dedicate more money to the areas that were specified as priorities from your list in step one.

man setting a budget.jpg

Step 3: Find a Contractor

Once you have decided on a definite plan, the next step is finding a contractor to work with. Discuss your plans with the contractor, invite him or her to tour your home, and discuss the changes that you want to achieve. Consult your contractor as to whether or not they believe any modifications need to be made to your plan and/or budget.

Remember to have an open mind about the contractor’s opinions. If he/she thinks that a certain aspect can’t be achieved, or that modifying a piece of the plan will generate better results, take care to listen and remember that his or her experience far exceeds yours; they are the professional.

Step 4: Set a Timeline

After discussing your ideas with the contractor and establishing a definite plan, set up a timeline.

time management.jpg

How long do you want to be under renovation? What is a realistic time frame for completion? Of course, nothing can be set in stone and unforeseen circumstances may occur, but having a timeline in mind can help in making the renovation process easier to cope with by having attainable goals set out in front of you.

Step 5: Be Prepared

A home renovation can quite literally uproot your entire life. Make sure you are ready for and aware of the challenges that may present themselves throughout the process. Make plans for you and your family to most comfortably move through all of the steps of this large task while successfully accomplishing all of the visions you have in mind.

For example, you may want to make arrangements to stay with a family friend for a time, or dedicate a part of your home, that isn’t going to be impacted, as your living space.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Once the walls are up and the fixtures are installed, you will be rounding home plate! Now it’s time to think about the finishing touches; the paint colors, the tile, the decorative accents.

couple choosing paint colors.jpg

Those finishing touches will pull together the entire look of the renovation and allow you to place that ‘Done’ stamp on the project. This last step is usually the most enjoyable as well, as this is where you get to express your personal style and create a space that reflects the environment you want to foster.

Renovating your home is an exciting, albeit, and overwhelming experience. Following these steps will ensure a successful start – and finish – to your renovation.

From the Inside Out – How Decorating with Color Schemes Can Change the Feel and Look of Your Home

The walls are the structure, the bones, of your home and the colors used to decorate those bones can significantly impact the semblance and character of your home. One color scheme may create a modern appearance, while another can create a feeling of tranquility.

The color schemes used within your home will not only affect the style of your home, but can also have an impact on your mood. Known as ‘color psychology‘, specific colors are shown to have differing effects on one’s mood and state of mind.

Paint Cans.jpg

To create a specific look and feel in your home, we have outlined some basic color schemes that will help in determining the most suitable choices for you and your family.

Cool and Calming:

If your goal is to create a zen-like feeling in your home, you are going to want to choose a color scheme that incorporates cool colors. Blues, greens and purples are considered the cool colors and are known for their ability to have a calming effect.

green bathroom.jpg

The color blue is thought of as a peaceful color. It can instantly make you feel calm and more at peace. As one of the most prominent colors in nature, green helps to create a feeling of rejuvenation and renewal. While purple blends together the calmness of blue and the energy associated with red, creating a feeling of serenity.

When creating a cool and calming environment, choose light, subdued hues of these colors. Not only will they foster a sense of peace in your surroundings, they will also help open up a room to make it seem more spacious. These colors are most commonly found in bedrooms and bathrooms.

Warm and Energizing:

Make your home warm and inviting with red, orange and yellow hues. These colors are known for their energizing effect and promote a sense of togetherness and harmony.

Orange Living Room.jpg

The color red is naturally energizing; it is powerful, passionate and stimulating. Orange has a similar effect but in a more subtle and subdued fashion. It can help stimulate feelings of warmth and happiness, while yellow is thought to be a happy and uplifting color.

To create a modern, yet warm look, stick with the brighter shades of these colors, and for a more relaxing, yet still stimulating effect, opt for reds, oranges and yellows that have cool undertones. These colors are great choices for common areas, such as living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms.

Black and White:

Not colors, but shades, black and white are great choices for creating a neutral palette, while also infusing a sense of modern sophistication. Black and white have a monochromatic effect that work very well in achieving a modern design.

black and white living room.jpg

This color scheme also serves as an excellent backdrop for infusing pops of colors, as virtually any color can be paired with a black and white themed room.

Pastels:

To create a soft, open, airy and romantic look, a pastel color scheme will be your best option. Pastels are infused with white, softening their impact, and generating an open, airy and romantic atmosphere.

The color schemes used in your home can have a huge impact on the look and feel of the space. Paint is the foundation in making your house come alive and in cultivating an environment that will nurture a safe and loving place to call home.
